Universal Helios Grand Hotel With Kids
An Honest Family Review

KidsParkGuide.com · Universal

The hotel you walk straight out of and into Epic Universe. Here’s what that’s really worth with kids, plus the perks it doesn’t include.

Quick Takeaways

Biggest perk: a private hotel entrance into Epic Universe. You walk into the park in the morning and back to your room at night, with no bus or parking lot.

Early Park Admission is included for hotel guests with valid park tickets, but Universal Express Unlimited is not.

The pool is calm and good-looking, with zero-entry, a hot tub, and cabanas, but no slides or splash zone.

The lobby coffee shop and market, Aurora Market, makes early mornings and quick snacks easy.

Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure mean a shuttle bus to CityWalk, usually around 15–20 minutes.

Best for families making Epic Universe the center of their trip. Families with little ones who want a big splash pool may be happier at Cabana Bay.

Anyone who’s done a full theme park day with kids knows the hardest part isn’t the rides. It’s getting everyone from the park exit back to the room once the energy is gone. Universal Helios Grand Hotel solves that better than almost any hotel in Orlando, because it sits inside Epic Universe with its own entrance into the park. Here’s what our family’s stay was like, and who the Helios Grand Hotel is really worth it for with kids.

What Staying at Helios Grand Is Like With Kids

The Walk Into Epic Universe

This is the reason to book Helios. Hotel guests use a dedicated entrance that opens into Celestial Park, Epic Universe’s central hub, a few minutes from the lobby. We walked right into the park every day and right back out every evening. After a long day, when everyone was dragging, being able to get to the room quickly was hard to beat.

Pro Tip

Right at park close, the hotel elevators get a line. It moves fast, but if you’ve got a sleeping kid in a stroller, heading back 15–20 minutes before closing skips it entirely.

Early Park Admission

Helios guests get Early Park Admission, typically up to an hour before regular opening, with valid park tickets. Which parks offer early entry can vary by day, so check your dates. Combined with the private entrance, it’s the easiest way to be near the front of the line for Epic Universe’s most popular rides.

What’s Not Included: Express Pass

This catches people off guard. Universal’s premier hotels (Portofino Bay, Hard Rock, and Royal Pacific) include free Universal Express Unlimited at the original parks, but Helios Grand does not. Hotel Express also doesn’t cover Epic Universe, so staying here doesn’t get you skip-the-line access in any park. If lines are a big worry, our guide to Universal Express Pass walks through when buying it makes sense.

Getting to the Other Parks

Epic Universe sits on its own campus, separate from Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure. Complimentary shuttle buses run to CityWalk, usually about 15–20 minutes depending on traffic, and you go through regular security from there. If your trip splits evenly across all three parks, factor in that bus time. Our how many days you need at Universal guide can help you decide how many Epic days to plan.

The Hotel and Rooms

Helios feels grand the moment you walk in: a big, bright lobby, high ceilings, and a Mediterranean-inspired look overlooking Epic Universe’s Celestial Park. It’s one of Universal’s top-tier hotels, with about 500 rooms. Standard rooms come with a king or two queen beds, and many have views over the park. A small number of themed How to Train Your Dragon kids’ suites are also available, with a separate kids’ bedroom styled after Berk. They’re limited, so book early if your kids would love it.

Even with park views, kids still need to sleep. A portable blackout curtain helps early sleepers and nappers, and a small portable white noise machine covers hallway noise when everyone files back in at park close. Our hotel sleep kit for kids covers the rest.

The Pool

The Helios pool is a resort-style, zero-entry pool with a hot tub, rentable cabanas, and a poolside bar and grill, Lotus Lagoon. It’s calm and good-looking, not over the top. There are no waterslides or splash-pad areas. Our kids still liked it a lot, and it was a nice change of pace from park days.

Pro Tip

If a big, splashy pool is a must for your kids, Universal’s other hotels go further. Our best Universal hotel pools ranking covers the more kid-focused options, including Cabana Bay.

Food and Coffee

The everyday win is Aurora Market, a coffee shop and grab-and-go market in the hotel. It’s genuinely convenient for coffee before early entry, breakfast on the way out, or snacks at night. For sit-down meals, Flora Taverna serves Mediterranean-style breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Lotus Lagoon covers casual food by the pool, and Bar Helios is a rooftop lounge with views over the park. Expect upscale-hotel pricing across the board.

Decision Guide

Is Helios Grand Right for Your Family?

Book Helios if…

  • Epic Universe is the main reason for your trip
  • You want the easiest possible walk back with tired kids
  • Early entry matters more to you than Express Pass
  • A calm pool is fine for your crew

Look elsewhere if…

  • Most of your days are at Universal Studios or Islands of Adventure
  • You want free Express Unlimited at the original parks
  • Your kids want slides and a big splash area
  • You’re trying to keep hotel costs down

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ✕Assuming Express Pass comes with the room. It doesn’t at Helios. Budget for it separately if you want it.
  • ✕Booking Helios for a trip focused on the original parks. The bus to CityWalk adds time on every one of those days. Helios shines when Epic is the priority.
  • ✕Digging for your room key at the hotel entrance. You’ll need your room key and park ticket to come and go. A breakaway lanyard keeps them handy for parents and older kids.
  • ✕Running out of phone battery by afternoon. You’ll lean on the Universal app all day for wait times and mobile ordering. Carry a slim 10,000mAh power bank, and see our power bank guide for other picks.

Real Parent Perspective

Helios felt grand and really nice from the moment we walked in. The best part, though, was the walk. Every day we went right into Epic Universe, and every evening, when everyone was dragging, we were back in our room in minutes. The elevator line got a little long right at park close each night, but it moved fast. The kids liked the pool, which isn’t over the top, and having the coffee shop downstairs was so convenient. We really enjoyed our stay.

The Bottom Line

If Epic Universe is the heart of your trip, Helios Grand is worth it for the walk alone.

Walking in each morning and back to your room in minutes at night makes long park days with kids much easier. Just go in knowing Express Pass isn’t included, the pool is relaxing rather than splashy, and the original parks mean a bus ride.
