Disney and Universal Height Requirements
Every Ride, Every Park

KidsParkGuide.com · Tips & Strategies

Every ride with a height minimum at the four Disney World parks and the three Universal Orlando parks, sorted by park and by height, so you know exactly what your kids can ride.

Here are the Disney and Universal height requirements for every ride at Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, in one place. Most Disney rides have no minimum at all, and at 48 inches your kids can ride every Disney World theme park ride. Universal asks for more: 40 inches opens most of the family rides, and its three biggest coasters need 51 to 54 inches.

Every height below was checked against Disney’s official height list and Universal’s ride height page in October 2026. The parks can change them, so check the Disney or Universal app close to your trip. If you’d rather see rides by age than by height, our ride guides for Disney rides for ages 2 through 4 and Disney rides for ages 5 to 8 cover that.

Most Disney rides have no height minimum. Peter Pan’s Flight, Frozen Ever After, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway, Na’vi River Journey, and Kilimanjaro Safaris are open to every height.

38 inches is Disney’s first big unlock. It opens Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Big Thunder Mountain, Slinky Dog Dash, Smugglers Run, and Kali River Rapids.

40 inches matters at both resorts. It adds 7 rides at Disney World and 10 at Universal, including most of Epic Universe.

The rules are firm. Heights are checked at the ride entrance, so measure at home before you promise a ride.

Nobody has to miss out. Disney’s Rider Switch and Universal’s Child Swap let adults take turns riding without waiting in line twice.

Disney and Universal Height Requirements by Height

This is the quick reference. Each row lists the rides that open at that height, so a child who is 40″ can ride everything in that row and every row above it.

The Two Numbers to Watch

For most families, 38″ and 40″ decide a Disney trip, and 40″ and 48″ decide a Universal trip. If your child is an inch or two short of one of those, a trip a few months later can look very different.

Disney World Height Requirements by Park

Only the rides with a height minimum are listed here. Everything else in the four parks is open to any height, which is why Disney works so well with toddlers. For the best age to plan around, see our best age for Disney World guide.

Height Isn’t the Whole Story

A ride’s minimum tells you what your kids are allowed to ride, not what they’ll enjoy. Skull Island: Reign of Kong opens at 36″ and Tower of Terror at 40″, and both are a lot for many preschoolers. Our sensory-friendly guide for Disney and Universal has ideas for kids who get overwhelmed.

What Each Height Opens Up

If you’re planning around one child’s height, this is the short version.

Under 32″

Every no-minimum ride at both resorts. That’s most of Disney World, plus Seuss Landing’s spinners and the Hogwarts Express at Universal.

32″ to 37″

Alien Swirling Saucers, the Speedway with an adult, and The Barnstormer at 35″. At Universal, E.T. and Yoshi’s at 34″, then six rides at 36″.

38″ to 39″

Disney’s first family coasters: Seven Dwarfs, Big Thunder, and Slinky Dog Dash, plus Smugglers Run and Kali River Rapids.

40″ to 43″

Most of Disney’s headliners, with Cosmic Rewind at 42″. Still out: Space Mountain, Flight of Passage, Everest, TRON, and Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. At Universal, most of Epic Universe and Gringotts at 42″.

44″ to 47″

Space Mountain, Flight of Passage, Everest, and Mission: SPACE Orange. At Universal, Ripsaw Falls.

48″ and Up

Every Disney World theme park ride. At Universal, everything except VelociCoaster, Fearfall, and the Hulk.

How Height Checks Work at Disney and Universal

  • 01Measure at home first. Heights are checked at the ride entrance, and an inch short is a no. Knowing your child’s height before you go saves a lot of disappointment in line.
  • 02Use Rider Switch at Disney. Tell the Cast Member at the entrance. One adult waits with the child who can’t ride while the rest of the group rides, then up to two people from the waiting group ride without going through the standard line. It works on most rides with a height minimum.
  • 03Use Child Swap at Universal. Universal offers Child Swap on many of its rides, and it works much the same way. Ask the Team Member at the ride entrance.
  • 04Know the companion rules. At Universal, kids under 48″ need to ride with a supervising companion who is at least 14. At Disney, children under 7 must ride with someone 14 or older on rides like Seven Dwarfs Mine Train.
  • 05Try the test seats at Universal. Many of the bigger rides have a test seat at the entrance, so you can check the fit before you wait.
  • 06Line up the big rides early. Once you know what everyone can ride, plan skip-the-line purchases around it. Our Express Pass vs. Lightning Lane guide breaks down when they’re worth it for families.

Water rides like Kali River Rapids, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, and the Islands of Adventure rafts will get you wet. A poncho multipack and a waterproof phone pouch keep the day from ending soggy, and everything else we bring is on our full Amazon theme park list.

As an Amazon Associate, KidsParkGuide may earn from qualifying purchases at no additional cost to you.

Disney’s water parks and Universal’s Volcano Bay have their own height rules, including some slides with a maximum height for kids’ areas. Our Volcano Bay with kids guide covers what little ones can do there.

Real Parent Perspective

Hitting a height milestone really does change a trip. Our oldest measured 43 inches on his first real Disney World trip, at five, which was just tall enough for Test Track, and he loved it. Our son started with Seven Dwarfs Mine Train and rode Slinky Dog Dash on repeat, and both open at 38 inches. But one of our boys usually avoids most roller coasters, so the height chart has never been our to-do list. It tells you what’s possible, and your kids tell you the rest.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ✕Promising a ride before your child is measured.
  • ✕Assuming Universal’s heights match Disney’s. Universal’s family rides mostly start at 40″, while several of Disney’s start at 38″.
  • ✕Counting on an older sibling under 14 as the riding companion.
  • ✕Treating a low minimum as a sign a ride is gentle. Tower of Terror and Skull Island are the classic examples.
  • ✕Skipping the big rides as a family instead of using Rider Switch or Child Swap.
  • ✕Planning around an old height list. Rides open, close, and change, so check the official app close to your trip.
The Bottom Line

Measure first, then plan the parks.

Disney World works for almost every height, opens its family coasters at 38″, and has nothing a 48″ child can’t ride. Universal asks for more, with 40″ and 48″ as the two big unlocks and three coasters above that.

Measure at home, use Rider Switch and Child Swap so nobody misses out, and let your kids’ heights decide which park gets the most time. If you’re still choosing between the two resorts, our Disney vs. Universal with kids guide compares them side by side.
