Best Universal Orlando Rides for Kids
By Age and Height
Every ride at Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe, sorted by what your kids can actually ride, from toddlers to tweens.
The best Universal Orlando rides for kids depend more on height than age. Toddlers under 40 inches have a short but fun list, 40 inches opens up most of the family rides, and 48 inches unlocks nearly everything else. Here’s every ride in the three theme parks, sorted by age group.
The heights below come from Universal’s official ride height page, checked in October 2026. Universal can change them, so check the app before you go. If you’re still deciding whether your kids are old enough for Universal at all, our best age for Universal Orlando guide covers that. This one is the ride list.
Height decides, not age. Team members measure at the ride entrance, and the rules are firm. Measure your kids at home in the shoes they’ll wear.
Under 48 inches means riding with a grown-up. Kids who meet a ride’s minimum but are under 48″ need a supervising companion, who has to be at least 14.
Child Swap works on nearly every ride with a height requirement. One adult waits with the little one while the others ride, then you trade places without getting back in line.
Epic Universe is the best park for 40-inch kids. Five of its rides open at 40″, including Mario Kart and Hiccup’s Wing Gliders.
Islands of Adventure has both ends. Seuss Landing is the best toddler land at Universal, and the park also has the biggest coasters.

Forty inches is the number to watch with preschoolers. It opens 10 rides at once across the three parks, including most of Epic Universe’s family headliners. If your child is an inch or two short, a trip a few months later can look very different.

Best Universal Rides for Ages 5 to 8
This is when Universal starts to open up. Most kids pass 40 inches around age 4 or 5 and 42 inches not long after, which adds the interactive rides, the motion simulators, and most of Epic Universe. Some taller 7- and 8-year-olds are already at 48″, so measure before you plan.

Best Universal Rides for Ages 9 to 12
Many kids reach 48 inches somewhere around ages 7 to 9, and that unlocks almost everything. For a lot of families, this is when Universal is at its best. If your kids are close to the line, it’s worth timing a trip around it.
- Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure: a story coaster with launches, a backward section, and a drop; many families call it the best ride at Universal48″ min.

- Jurassic World VelociCoaster: fast, with launches and inversions, but smooth51″ min.

- Stardust Racers: two racing coaster tracks with big launches, and the most intense ride at Epic Universe48″ min.

Looking up a ride video at home is the easiest way to see if a big coaster is a yes. Many of the bigger rides also have a test seat at the entrance, so kids can check the fit before you wait in line.
Rides That Feel Scarier Than Their Height Requirement
Height tells you what your kids are allowed to ride, not what they’ll enjoy. These are the rides that surprise families most often.
- Skull Island: Reign of Kong (36″): Dark, loud, and full of giant creatures. A lot of kids under 6 find it too much.
- TRANSFORMERS: The Ride-3D (40″): Loud explosions and fast 3D action.
- Curse of the Werewolf and Monsters Unchained (40″ and 48″): Dark Universe is meant to be spooky. Kids who scare easily can skip the whole land without missing much.
- Revenge of the Mummy (48″): Scary mummies and fire, mostly in the dark.
- Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey (48″): Dementors and a big spider scene.
For motion-sensitive kids, the simulator rides cause the most trouble: The Simpsons Ride, Forbidden Journey, Battle at the Ministry, and Minion Mayhem. Our sensory-friendly guide for Disney and Universal has more ideas for kids who get overwhelmed.
Water Rides: Plan to Get Wet
Islands of Adventure has three water rides: Bilge-Rat Barges and Ripsaw Falls will soak you, and Jurassic Park River Adventure gets you wet on the big drop. Fyre Drill at Epic Universe is a water battle. Water rides often close for refurbishment in the cooler months, so check the schedule if one is on your list. A few things make them easier:
- Ponchos: A poncho multipack keeps everyone drier and costs less than buying ponchos in the park.
- A waterproof phone pouch: A waterproof phone pouch keeps your phone safe if you ride without a locker.
- A dry bag: A compact dry bag holds a change of clothes for the youngest riders.

Everything else we bring is on our full Amazon theme park list. Universal’s water park, Volcano Bay, has its own height rules, with most slides at 42″ or 48″. It can close for part of the winter for maintenance, so check dates, and our Volcano Bay with kids guide covers what little ones can do there.
Which Universal Park Is Best for Your Kids’ Ages?
If you only have a day or two, let your kids’ heights pick the park.
Islands of Adventure for Seuss Landing, plus Epic Universe for Yoshi’s Adventure, the carousel, Fyre Drill, and the play areas.
Epic Universe. Five rides open at 40″, and Super Nintendo World and Isle of Berk are nearly all theirs.
Islands of Adventure. Hagrid’s, Forbidden Journey, and VelociCoaster make it the best big-kid park.
Epic Universe, where the family rides and the big coasters sit close together. Use Child Swap for the 48″ rides.
How to Ride More With Kids at Universal
- 01Measure at home. Do it in the shoes they’ll wear. If a ride is a close call, try it in the morning, since kids can measure a little shorter by the end of a long day.
- 02Use Child Swap. Ask the team member at the ride entrance. One adult waits with the child who can’t ride, then switches without getting back in line. It’s Universal’s version of Disney’s Rider Switch.
- 03Rope drop the big ones. Hagrid’s and the Epic Universe headliners build long lines fast. Our Universal rope drop strategy shows where to go first.
- 04Think about Express Pass for younger kids. Long standby lines are hardest on little ones. Our Express Pass vs. Lightning Lane guide breaks down when it’s worth it.
- 05Get a park-to-park ticket for the Hogwarts Express. It’s one of the few rides every age can do. Our ultimate Harry Potter day at Universal shows how to fit it in.
- 06Check for closures. Rides close for refurbishment. Jurassic Park River Adventure, for example, was closed for most of 2026. Check Universal’s site close to your trip.
One of our boys usually avoids most roller coasters, so the height chart has never been our to-do list. Some of our kids’ favorite moments weren’t rides at all. Our oldest has loved dinosaurs for years, and seeing a real Jurassic Park jeep lit him up. Our youngest is a huge Toad fan, and Toadstool Cafe in Epic Universe ended up being one of our favorite moments. And whatever their ages, ride the Hogwarts Express both ways. Our kids loved spotting all the little scenes along the way.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ✕Buying tickets before measuring. A few inches decide what kind of trip you’ll have.
- ✕Promising a ride before your child is measured at the entrance.
- ✕Assuming a 36″ ride is made for toddlers. Skull Island is the classic example.
- ✕Counting on an older sibling under 14 as the supervising companion. Universal requires a companion who is 14 or older.
- ✕Leaving Pteranodon Flyers for the afternoon. The line moves slowly, so go early.
- ✕Skipping the big rides as a family instead of using Child Swap.
Measure first, then let height pick the park.
Under 40 inches, Universal is Seuss Landing, the Hogwarts Express, and a handful of Epic Universe rides. At 40 inches, Epic Universe opens up and becomes the best park for your family. At 48 inches, Islands of Adventure has the rides most families come for.
Use Child Swap so nobody misses out, let kids watch the big rides before they decide, and plan the day around what they can ride, not what’s most famous. If you’re weighing Universal against Disney, our best Disney World rides for ages 5 to 8 guide is a good side-by-side.
